“Reformation is a research on the scapegoat mechanism”, explains experimental filmmaker Jeannette Groenendaal about her vividly personal 2011 Paradocs selection. “How does one group of people who think that they know the truth, what is right and wrong, how do they decide if somebody else is going to hell?”
Groenendaal’s film is autobiographical – an account of the sexual abuse she suffered in the Dutch Bible Belt village of her youth more than 40 years ago. But her approach to the story’s telling is far from narrative; instead she turns to lyricism and metaphor to describe a trauma that she feels cannot be expressed in words.
“I was driving through the countryside where I grew up and there were ghost movies screaming out of the quagmire of this Dutch river landscape”, she explains. But those memories were exactly that – ghostly and rendered abstract by the passage of time. Therefore, in order to portray her initial arrival as a seven year-old stranger into her adopted village, Groenendaal returns with a cast of ‘strangers’ who explore aspects of the director’s past, under the bemused gaze of the contemporary villagers.
One couple dances an elaborate tango before tumbling into an erotic and exhausted clinch, all performed before the village children. A pre-pubescent child stands silently as a village farmer jokes about the people he knows who have had sex with farm animals. “When I remember my neighbour who was fucking his cow, I went there with this performer/dancer who was totally ready to try it – but we never got there”, Groenendaal explains. “It is very difficult to film what really happened, and actually that is the problem. The images of absence are, I think, very present in the movie. It is very hard to film things that you cannot even talk about. These are taboo memories on misuse.”
The latter parts of Groenendaal’s experimental film introduce us to a vital and ‘lusty’ nature populated by women who draw comfort from their landscape. We see a naked woman who rides a pig in order to recreate the Hieronymus Bosch tableau from his painting Paradise, while a white witch trains her white owl to swoop in the woods. Meanwhile, a Korean woman screams her pain to the non-judgmental trees and birds. It is, argues Groenendaal, a countryside in which ‘fucking’ happens continually, but when removed from the “male gaze” of the Christian fundamentalist, this fucking is pure and vital, rather than sinful and secretive.

__Bevroren Herinneringen
_
(NB)

About Project Donderpreek part 1, the performance side, in NRC)
NRC Cs, vrijdag jl
Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 11:04pm | Edit Note | Delete

No stranger to controversy, nor to the idea of ruffling a few feathers, maverick auteur Jeanette Groenendaal will present excerpts from her new project Reformation this afternoon to an audience of Paradocs devotees. The project will depict the fundamental Christian orthodoxy that Groenendal, dubbed “the daughter of the devil” by local villagers, allegedly suffered while growing up in rural Holland in the 1970s.
“It is a return to the past”, she emotes. “Not for revenge, nor to accuse, but to research the roots of a past that is coming back – the religion, the conservatism, the judgmental moral standards. The village becomes a film set for my memory, and when the village itself begins to remember, that’s the point at which I turn on my camera and the documentary begins.”
Using three screens within the Escape Club, Groenendaal will show excerpts from the 120 hours of footage shot so far. “I will try to interweave a movie, so the audience can witness the filmmaking progress”, she comments. “And I will invite them to edit the film in their heads.”
“The major theme of Reformation will be the scapegoat mechanism,” she continues. “That is what I was. That is how I was perceived. Christian fundamentalism is very dangerous as it excludes people from society – it affected me and I think it still happens today. It is a very exclusive and judgmental form of politics.”

Jeanette Groenendaal is in process of an experimental method of filmmaking, mixing documentary, re-enactment and activist performance. She questions her past in a tiny village along the fertile river delta of the Netherlands. After 38 years Jeanette returns to the village, performing a filmdirector ; will she be recognized as the " Child of the devil" she was condemned to be at the time? The "City Whore" as she was named? Will the villagers participate their part in their own exclusive fundamentalist landscape? Who remembers the Christian schoolmasters incestuous practices on the young girls?
The return is not for revenge, not to interrogate or to condemn, She returns in search for understanding. Not only about herself, or the history of the Netherlands, but also to understand about her country today; the religion, the conservatism, the xenophobia, values and National identity.
The film in creation is more than a personal therapy or a documentary on a fundamentalist community. Filmmaker fictionalizes her own biography to stylized memory-picture, dream fragments re-construct passages from her youth in a village. Her protagonist is dividend over several female body’s that wash ashore in the village like “FremdKorper” that infiltrate the village in different ways to confront its preconceptions. A female and poetic answer to a patriarchic male universe, The film proposes eroticism of the garden of Eden against the eroticism of sexual repressions and the forthcoming perversions (Hieronymus Bosch lived in that very landscape) The dark Calvinist village is flooded by a tsunami of female nudity
And in the shadows of the dream the filmmaker’s reveals something of that cultural economical powers we call globalization and keeps the village in its paradoxical grip. A web full of intrigues covers the village connecting it with unexpected insights in overproduction of milk and honey, capitalism and Calvinism, religion and racism in South Africa, the fight against homosexuality and Muslims not only the Lord is the savior of the island between the rivers of the Netherlands....
We had enough of the simplifying and identifying images on stage by director- egos, who want us to be interested in how they see the world. We had enough of the ignorant arrogance with which the audience is mostly underestimated. But we didn't have enough yet of the complexity and the pleasure of a polyphonic art work, which allows individual, different access from different sides by different spectators (Heiner Goebbels)

William Raban begint Paradocs-talk.
